In the present climate of a failing British state and creeping authoritarianism we need to find a way to work together as individuals and groups to transform our political culture. Recent reports indicate that both the major political parties are now considering constitutional reform, and there are even hints of support for a written constitution. We propose a series of alternative events aimed at a grassroots campaign around:

1. an inclusive written constitution that embraces the aspirations of the powerless majority and
2. a civil and social rights mobilisation in support of its terms.

You are invited to attend the launch of our Open Forum on 26th July to debate these goals, share campaign stories and help plan future events together. We hope you will be free to come and join us.

Organisers and sponsors so far include: Mark Barrett (People in Common); A World to Win; Dr Ghayasuddin Siddiqui (Muslim Parliament of Great Britain in a personal capacity), The Creative Forum.

As those of you who saw Greg Palast speak at the NUJ last week will know, the recent presidential election in Mexico was marred by blatant vote rigging and Florida-style fraud.

An emergency picket outside the Mexican embassy has been organised for tomorrow, Friday July 14, from 1pm to 2pm to support the demand by social movements in Mexico to count each and every vote. These pickets are taking place in many different countries around the world.

In front of half a million supporters last Saturday, the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador formally challenged the July 2 election results, charging fraud and citing other irregularities with the electoral process.

Without a doubt, the elections were rigged to prevent the PRD from winning the elections. The Mexican ruling elite are prepared to go to any lengths to prevent Lopez Obrador from becoming the next president of Mexico.

We must protest against this attack on democratic rights. Please join the picket of the Mexican embassy tomorrow and pass this info on to anyone else you think might be interested. The Mexican Embassy is situated at 16 St George Street, Hanover Square, London W1 (nearest tube: Oxford Circus).

Letters of protest should be sent to the embassy at mexuk@easynet.co.uk - and see www.gregpalast.com and www.narconews.com for the latest news from Mexico.

Then this Saturday July 15 from 1pm to 7pm there is the Radical Activist Network conference on Latin America: Social movements fight back, at the University of London Union, Malet Street, London WC1 (nearest tube: Goodge Street).

Oscar Olivera, spokesperson for the Coalition in Defence of Water and Life in Cochabamba, Bolivia, will be speaking, as will Hilary Wainwright (Red Pepper), Andy Higginbottom (Frontline Latin America and Colombia Solidarity Campaign), Sue Branford (Latin America Bureau and War on Want) and Jorge Martin (Hands Off Venezuela).

Sessions and workshops will include: Social Movements and Left Governments, Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution, Social movements in Bolivia, Brazil’s Landless movement and the continuing Zapatista revolt in Mexico. Entry by donation (£2 suggested), more info: http://www.radicalactivist.net/latinamerica

Finally, next week’s Wednesday meeting will be from 6.45pm at The Inn On the Green, 3-5 Thorpe Close (under the Westway), Portobello Green, W10 (nearest tube: Ladbroke Grove), where we will be holding the British premier of the new documentary Five Factories, about workers’ control in Venezuela, followed by a debate and social. We hope you can make this special event, more info at
http://www.handsoffvenezuela.org/index.php?option=com_events&task=view_detail&Itemid=&agid=4&year=2006&month=07&day=19

The agenda is available here as a PDF

A free-to-attend conference looking at many aspects of Peak Oil is taking place on Saturday 15 July 2006 at the BedZed development in Hackbridge, just outside London. The event, Peak Speak 2, is the follow up to the successful Peak Speak 1, held at the same location last year.
Organised by PowerSwitch.org.uk, and run in a friendly and informal manner, it is designed to give plenty of opportunity to discuss an issue that will dominate the 21st century – the ongoing decline
of global oil supplies, how it will affect all lives and what we can do about it. Along with Climate Change, it will make this century very different to the last.

As Jeremy Leggett wrote in the Independent, January 2006, “We have allowed oil to become vital to virtually everything we do. Ninety per cent of all our transportation, whether by land, air or sea, is
fuelled by oil. Ninety-five per cent of all goods in shops involve the use of oil. Ninety-five per cent of all our food products require oil use. Just to farm a single cow and deliver it to market requires six barrels of oil, enough to drive a car from New York to Los Angeles.” Meanwhile there is a quickly growing acceptance of the concept of imminent Peak Oil. Notable figures such as Bill Clinton and Al Gore believe we are at Peak Oil while the oil company Total sees it as occurring around 2020. The challenges that Peak Oil and Climate Change presents are stark indeed, and it is important for individuals, businesses and government to begin addressing this as soon as possible.

For some, Peak Speak 1, which had seventy people in attendance, was a life changing experience.
“Peakspeak-1 motivated me to take the plunge and change direction so that in the year that followed I have almost completed an MSc in Renewable Systems Energy Engineering, and hope to make a career in that area going forward, and contribute to the coming problems in some way,” wrote a previous attendee.

The speakers include:

Donnachadh McCarthy, author of Saving The Planet Without Costing The Earth (3acorns.co.uk);

Chris Vernon, of PowerSwitch and OilDrum UK, with analysis of UK power supply; Norman Church with his follow up to Systems and Interdependencies;

Doly Garcia speaking about Peak Oil Action in Brighton, and Naresh Giangrande who will be discussing Biofuels on the back of Hubbert’s Curve.

The emphasis, however, will be on everyone participating. There will also be an opportunity to see and discuss “The Power of Community : How Cuba Survived Peak Oil” as well as a workshop in learning how to “ Build Networks and Relationships for a Post Peak
World.” And as last year, there will be the PeakNik’s Picnic.

Entry is free but you will need to register in advance as places are limited. Email
March 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th from 6pm

This month The Synergy Centre is hosting uniteddiversity’s series of Another World Is Blossoming events, including four weeks of screenings starting this Thursday 9th, and a big Centre fundraising party on Friday March 31st. It’s all taking place as part the NODE.London Season of Media Arts.

Thursday March 9th
Main Feature - 8pm Sharp
The Revolution Will Not Be Televised
http://www.chavezthefilm.com/
International Jury: “The best television programme in the world this year”

Hugo Chavez, elected President of Venezuela in 1998, is a coulful unpredictable folk hero, beloved by his nation’s working class and a tough-as-nails, quixotic opponent to the power structure that would see him deposed. Two independent filmmakers were inside the presidential palace on April 11, 2002, when he was forcibly removed from office. They were also present 48 hours later when, remarkably, he returned to power amid cheering aides. Their film records what was probably history’s shortest-lived coup d’état. It’s a unique document about political muscle and an extraordinary portrait of the man The Wall Street Journal credits with making Venezuela “Washington’s biggest Latin American headache after the old standby, Cuba.”

Second Feature Film - 10pm
Network (1976)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074958/
Won 4 Oscars and Voted one of the best 100 films of all time.

Howard Beale (Peter Finch) is an ageing TV anchorman for UBS who is fired, effective in two weeks, after his ratings have been steadily deteriorating. He reacts to this by sensationally announcing on live television his intention to commit suicide on air. In doing so, Beale becomes a major TV icon and one of the most valuable assets to the Communications Corporation of America (CCA), the company that is gradually taking control of UBS. As a result he is given his own show as `the mad prophet of the air-waves’. He appears live on television every week-day evening to tell the real truth to the people of America. The programme is a huge success but Beale uses his power to make startling revelations about CCA, leaving the company executives with a serious problem.

Shorts - from 6pm

Real2Real
http://www.real2reel.co.nr

Founded as an off-shoot of Lifecycles (Pedal Powered Cinema And Multimedia Outreach Collective) in mid 2002, Real2Reel is a small group of video artists making short and occasionally amusing films about counter-cultural activities, social struggles and environmental concerns, all with a strong grassroots direct action bias.

Reclaim Love
http://www.o-i-l.org

Footage from the annual Reclaim Love event that takes place at the Eros Statue in Picadilly Circus each year. Check the website for more info and what its all about.

Part of United Diversity’s ‘Another World is Blossoming’ festival

You are invited to the Creative Forum this Sunday at Russell Square.

A collectively self-organised conference for linking with others, discussing, and planning. Use the event to reach people to help make your projects happen.

Everyone agrees to the ‘Law of two feet’: if you feel you are not contributing or gaining from a particular session it is fine to move on to another. This creates a focused, creative, informal environment to be in.

Add to the shared list of ‘wants and needs’, to tap into the skills and resources of those gathered for the event.

The event features a debate done in a Cogers-style on the ’state of the world now and the challenges that face us’, with speakers introducing alternative technologies and diverse business models. A debating method as way to negate the difficulties of networking and the meeting of minds.

Leap-frogging from this event there is to be much more public event at a later date specifically for expanding and actively promoting the projects.

Creative Forums are a gathering of capable and knowledgable people to pool our resources and create solutions. A creative, environmental, grass-roots, forward thinking atmosphere. Come to share your projects and to learn from others.

The systems and institutions upon which we rely for our well-being and survival are at risk of massive failure. Ecosystems everywhere are in decline. The age of cheap plentiful oil is over. Food and energy shortages are on the horizon.

Few are aware of the full nature and extent of our predicament and, of those that are, many feel powerless to do anything about it.

Corporate media manipulates our minds while the monetary system continues to fund plundering unelected presidents and plunge the world into an ever-increasing spiral of debt.

But all is not lost. There IS another way.

In fact, Another World Is Blossoming…

Communities across the World are beginning to self-organise and share resources in order to take back control of their lives and build hope for a sustainable future.

Another World Is Blossoming events will raise awareness about our predicament, inspire collective action for change and launch the Synergy Community Fund.

With films, music, debate and more participants will be empowered with knowledge about the state of the world, what pioneering groups are doing about it and how they can join in.

Together We Have Everything we need to Create the World We Want

This meeting is to get the ball really rolling with practical projects.

To learn positive low impact skills from organic gardening, low impact building, alt. energy, alt community living, and action skills.

To put people in touch with schemes that need volunteers and vice versa. To help with sustainable projects and communities and for us to start new ones both urban and rural.

To campaign / be involved in campaigns against greenwash, and its unsustainable ?green? consumerist/capitalist disguises. i.e the root causes of climate change and social misery are inherent in the capitalist system and it?s need for market/production growth.

To promote non-hierarchical campaigning and community building through building of genuine skills and skill-sharing. And everybody gets their hands dirty. i.e promotion of DIY culture over voyeuristic / consumerist/capitalist activities.

To connect urban and rural.

To make this available for all i.e. not economically, physically or socially prohibitive.

‘Our task is not to overthrow globalisation, but to capture it, and to use it as a vehicle for humanity’s first global democratic revolution.’

‘Nuestra tarea no es derrocar la globalizacion, si no capturarla y utilizarla como el vehiculo para lanzar la primera revolucion democratica de la humanidad’
from ‘The Age of Consent’, by George Monbiot

Positive Global Movements started with a 6 day event at Rampart Social Creative Centre and part of the Creative Forum in St.George’s theatre.

Globalisation, in the hands of the corporations, is a means of colonising the new territories opened up by communication technology. In the hand of the people, it can be a medium to unite and put to work new global laws that preserve the livelihood of the people instead of securing profit for inhuman corporations.

A travelling show of lateral design concepts & pictures of an imaginary futuristic megalopolis with conceptual designs of portable dwellings and shelters deploying retractable and folding prefab modular systems, developed for nearly 35 years at Hololand Laboratories for lateral design concepts – some of it over the past few years at Area Ten in Peckham, London, UK

Pim Conradi

Innovator of construction systems, such as:

- Portable holography optics systems, dedicated as a fixed recording medium for 3-d arts and sculpture.
- Portable units for survival or folding nomadic shelters
- Development of modular D.I.Y.-construction/design systems, utilising simplified physical properties of regular geometric solids resulting in orbicular shaped enclosures.

I’d like to introduce you to a friend of mine currently residing in Peckham, South London.
He is an artist and designer who believes in living in environments that are abstract to the conventional square-boxed room. His environments are very inspiring to be inside and fractures the views of how we should be living.

Below are some photos I took of his installations at Area10 in Peckham, I recommend a visit if you get the chance.
